Welcome
Prescription Viagra or sildenafil citrate was approved by the FDA in 1998 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. About viagra
Although Viagra allows, men who otherwise would be unable to, to engage in sexual activity; it is not a wonder drug. Viagra does not spontaneously cause erection. Sexual stimulation causes the erection that Viagra makes possible through an increased ability for blood to flow. Viagra does not change the size or shape of the penis. Nor does it protect from sexually transmitted diseases. If you have another condition (such as a serious cardiac condition) that prevents you from safely having sex, Viagra will not reverse it. In fact, Viagra may even make the underlying condition worse and should not be taken. Viagra does not increase or decrease overall fertility. Finally, Viagra is not a cure for erectile dysfunction; instead, it is a temporary treatment that lasts between thirty minutes and four hours.
Viagra is not appropriate for everyone and should be prescribed only for men with erectile dysfunction. If you have a structural abnormality of the penis, Viagra may not be for you. Those on nitrates should not take Viagra as dangerous drops in blood pressure may occur. A lower dose may be appropriate for those with diabetes or who have hepatic or renal impairment. Diabetics should be cautioned about the signs and symptoms of severe hyperglycemia (such as extreme thirst, dry mouth, extreme fatigue, and fruity breath odor) as Viagra may cause sudden spikes in blood glucose levels.
Even though Viagra was tolerated similarly to placebo in clinical trials, it does have side effects. In certain sensitive individuals, Viagra has caused allergic reaction. Those who have experienced an allergic reaction to sildenafil, or any other component of this medication, should not take Viagra. Anyone experiencing rash, hives, tingling or swelling in the facial area or difficulty breathing, should seek immediate medical attention. In certain individuals, Viagra may cause temporary, visual color changes or tinting. Pilots are warned that they should not take Viagra within four hours of flight for this reason. If the color changes do not go away within four hours or if any other sudden vision changes occur, emergency medical attention is required. In rare cases, temporary or permanent blindness has been associated with Viagra use. Painful erections or prolonged erection should be reported immediately as permanent damage to penile tissue is possible under these circumstances. Other more common and less severe side effects include headache, dizziness, peripheral edema, nausea, and facial flushing.
Those on certain medications may experience complications when used with Viagra. Those on nitrates for transient chest pain should not use Viagra as dangerous drops in blood pressure may occur. Anti-hypertensive medications may be taken while on Viagra but need to be closely monitored for potential drops in blood pressure. Blood thinners increase the risk of severe bleeding. Those on blood thinners should be warned about bleeding tendencies and directed on reporting signs and symptoms of excessive bleeding.
Since Viagra has an action window of thirty minutes to four hours, it should be taken approximately one hour before sexual activity. The absorption of Viagra may be inhibited by excessive dietary fat, so those on Viagra should be cautioned about avoided eating foods high in fat before taking Viagra. Viagra should not be taken daily for an extended period of time or for any other reason other than erectile dysfunctions as in rare circumstances patients on Viagra have developed dependency.
Despite the cautions and warnings of Viagra use, Viagra is the number one medication prescribed with an average of 300 million pills being sold each year. This is because, under normal circumstances, Viagra’s benefits far outweigh its potential complications; however, only a physician can determine if Viagra is right for your particular health needs.
